opportunity |ˌäpərˈt(y)oōnitē|

a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something

opportunityAs you reflect on the past year, how well did you take advantage of expected or unexpected opportunities? A wise teacher stays alert to learning moments.

When they come to you

Sometimes, you can expect them. For example, who are the parents of your students? What jobs do they have? What are their talents? Inviting parents into the classroom is Aloha teaching. Your parents can provide unique opportunities for your children’s learning.

Unexpected opportunities will come, too. For example, the school might be facing a traffic flow problem in the parking lot. This could be a great opportunity for your children to use their reasoning and critical thinking skills. Incorporate math, public speaking skills, persuasive writing, cooperative learning, etc. around the problem.

When you create them yourself

Not only do opportunities come to you but you can create them yourself. Stay as far away from predictability as you can; create opportunities for your children to use their learning in real, practical ways. Review the overview of your curriculum and consider potential opportunities for your students.

For the past few days we have looked at Decisions, Changes and Opportunities. The reflective season of the summer provides quality time to look back on your year. Take the past into next year by expectantly making decisions that are aligned with good teaching, implementing changes to strengthen your curriculum and taking advantage of unexpected and created opportunities.
